The Vaux's swifts presented a spectacular display at the Agate Hall chimney last night. Observers from CCBA, along with approximately 100 individuals, witnessed over 5,000 swifts entering the chimney for nocturnal roosting during their southern migration. EDIT: These are Vaux's swifts, not bats! They have been utilizing this chimney for decades during their spring and fall migrations. | Coast to Cascades Bird Alliance

Each year, thousands of Vaux’s Swifts migrate through the Bay Area, using chimneys to roost as they go. They typically are out of the area by end of October but this year we have quite a few that seem to be overwintering here! This information and the images/ videos are made available due to the dedicated volunteers who monitor the Swifts here. We appreciate your amazing work! | Golden Gate Bird Alliance

A flock of around 4,000 Vaux’s Swifts were captured swirling above a church steeple in Salem, Oregon, before pouring into the chimney like smoke running in reverse. It’s part of the birds’ nightly roosting ritual as they cling to the brick inside. (via: David P. Craig via Storyful) #viral

There's been some news coverage lately with discussions of whether the migrating Vaux's Swifts have abandoned their traditional roost in the chimney of the Chapman School in NW Portland. In a bit of good news, after a hiatus last year, some Swifts have returned to roost in the chimney of the Bertman House, at 37th and Washington. Thanks to neighbor Clodine M. for sharing this video shot Thursday at dusk. | Milwaukie Parks Foundation
