Want a peak into our calving barn at night? Here it is. Our heifers spend their days outside in our Hoop barns, but at night we move everyone that hasn’t calved inside. Pairs go into one of the bonding pens lining the outer edge of the barn, and the expecting mamas roam in the middle. Why do we do this? If the heifers calve in the middle of the night, they are indoors and not exposed to the elements. This increases calf survival and decreases the number of night checks we do. The system works pr

Calving season is upon us and we are well into calving out our first cycle heifers! After the calves are born and have fully bonded in our calving barn, we move them to a pairs pen in one of the Hoop barns with other calves the same age and sex. We baled cornstalks today. These bales are used to bed the pigs in hoop barn and our outdoor gestation sows. Cornstalks are not my favorite bedding for pigs. I like straw better. We do not mow these stalks first, we use the twin rake, set it a little higher and rake the loser stalks and husks. A hoop barn has its advantages and disadvantages. The first time a horse hears and sees snow sliding off the roof can be pretty…..shall we say exciting😂!
