One area of confusion for many students is the difference between coarse crackles and fine crackles. For coarse crackles, remember the 3 "L's": low pitch, long duration, and loud. These sounds often remind me of someone blowing a straw in water, and you can hear them during inspiration and sometimes expiration. For fine crackles, they have a higher pitch, shorter duration, and softer sound.
